From June 29 to July 3, a delegation led by Professor Cheng Yongzhong, Party Secretary of West China Hospital, Sichuan University (WCH), visited Germany and Mozambique. The visit aimed to establish connections with premier German universities, expand Sino-European medical collaboration, and participate in events celebrating the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 50th anniversary of China-Mozambique health cooperation.
During the visit to Germany, the delegation held a working meeting with Professor Birgit Müinch, Vice Rector for International Affairs of the University of Bonn, and Professor Marietta Toma, Vice Dean for International Affairs of the Medical Faculty. The two sides discussed collaboration in areas including personnel exchanges, medical education, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular interventional research and clinical practice, and immune regulation mechanisms and translational research. The delegation also visited the Freiburg University Dental School and the University Hospital Frankfurt.
In Mozambique, the delegation attended a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Mozambique to celebrate the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 50th anniversary of China-Mozambique health cooperation. At the event, Ambassador Zheng Xuan of China to Mozambique, Minister of Health Ussene Isse, Deputy Director General Zhang Feng of the Health Commission of Sichuan Province, and Professor Cheng Yongzhong jointly unveiled the "China-Africa Joint Medical Center (Mozambique)", established under the leadership of WCH.
The delegation held discussions with Maputo Central Hospital on deepening the mechanism for the China-Africa counterpart hospital cooperation project. Both sides reached consensus on specialty co-development, telemedicine, healthcare worker training, and personnel exchange programs. During the visit, the expert team conducted a free clinic, providing medical services and medications to local residents, representatives of Chinese enterprises in Mozambique, and overseas Chinese patients. Professor Cheng also visited and extended greetings to the 26th Chinese medical team in Mozambique, learning in detail about their work and living conditions abroad. He received a briefing on the team's phased accomplishments, experiences gained, and plans for the next phase of their mission.
This visit carried dual significance – strengthening Sino-European academic partnerships and advancing Sino-African health cooperation. It was a practical step to expand WCH's international engagement and opened a new chapter in China-Mozambique health collaboration. Looking ahead, WCH will continue to implement cooperative projects with the University of Bonn. With the China-Africa Joint Medical Center as a key platform, WCH will promote telemedicine, talent training, and specialty development initiatives, ensuring that "WCH expertise" genuinely benefits African communities, and advancing high-level international cooperation to accelerate WCH's progress toward becoming a world-class medical institution.
