Prof. Luo Fengming of WCH elected as the first Chinese member of Fleischner Society

In June 2025, at the annual meeting of the international top academic organization Fleischner Society for Thoracic Imaging and Diagnosis held in Rome, Italy, Professor Luo Fengming from the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine of West China Hospital (WCH), Sichuan University was officially invited to become a member-elect of the society. He is the first Chinese scholar to receive this honor since the society’s establishment in 1969 and also the only new member selected by the society this year. This marks that the research level of West China Hospital in the field of diagnosis and treatment of chest diseases has been recognized by international authorities.


Professor Luo Fengming has long been committed to the research of early diagnosis of interstitial lung disease. His important achievements have been published in top international academic journals and have received high praise from peers at home and abroad. WCH advocates promoting the high-quality development of clinical disciplines through high-level international cooperation, actively encouraging experts and scholars to deeply integrate into the international academic circle, and fully demonstrating the academic influence of West China Medicine. Professor Luo Fengming's election this time is a reflection of the international academic community's high recognition of the academic level and professional ability of West China experts.

The Fleischner Society is one of the most prestigious academic organizations in the field of chest imaging, dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of chest diseases. Its membership is regarded as the one of the highest academic honors in this field. The society is known for its members’ outstanding contributions and leadership in chest imaging diagnosis, research, and education. The guidelines and consensus statements it publishes are regarded as the gold standard worldwide and have a profound impact on clinical practice. Members are selected through a strict process of selection, nomination, and invitation. The number of members is very limited. Currently, there are about 70 active members and about 40 senior members. All selected members are top authoritative scholars and opinion leaders in the global field of chest imaging. The society maintains the characteristic of having members from multiple disciplines, including experts in adult and pediatric radiology, pathology, adult and pediatric pulmonology, thoracic surgery, physiology, morphology, epidemiology, and other related sciences.
